In Oban this Thursday, 19th February, there is a Public Meeting where the NHS Highland Lead Nurse for Argyll & Bute will take part, hearing directly from local mothers and mothers-to-be about the lack of local maternity scanning.

This is a significant breakthrough for the movement.

Part of the Mums-to-be need Local Scans campaign is about getting the NHS to communicate better with women in Argyll & Bute:

  • so that new mums and pregnant women can speak out about their experiences since local scanning was withdrawn;
  • and so that NHS management can explain what they’re doing to restore local scanning.

That communication has been missing since local services stopped 18 months ago.

In a major move forwards, NHS Highland’s Chief Executive, Elaine Mead, has agreed that Pat Tyrrell, Lead Nurse for Argyll & Bute, should meet with campaigners.

This Oban Public Meeting is the first, and the movement hopes not the last, such event.

Also taking part on Thursday are:

  • Mary Galbraith, Labour candidate for the general election who is pushing hard for local scanning to be restored and doing the hard yards around Argyll with the petition which is being energetically signed;
  • and Councillor Mary-Jean Devon, councillor for Oban South & the Isles, a redoubtable campaigner for all things of importance to her ward. Living on Mull means that Councillor Devon brings first hand knowledge of the additional stress for pregnant women to have to travel from the isalnds and across the mainland to Glasgow for their vital maternity scans.

There are currently more than 600 signatures on the petition.

At Thursday’s meeting, local women can show the Health Board directly that they really care about getting scanning services brought back to Oban, and send the message that their views must be heard.

This Oban meeting will be in the Corran Halls at 7pm on Thursday 19 February.

It is open to mothers and mothers-to-be, fathers and fathers-to-be, those with a professional interest in maternity services – such as NHS staff, elected representatives,and all others in the community who want to see local scanning restored to Oban.

Everyone interested in being there to take advantage of this first opportunity for direct conversation with NHS Highland  on this matter can confirm their intention to attendance using this online event page.
